After Gipsy Moth IV beat the Clipper sailing times and having been sailed around the world solo, the main sponsors (which included The Sunday Times and Whitbread) saw the public appeal and Sunday Times sponsored the first Golden Globe Race. Later in 1973, the Whitbread round the world race was started. The rest is history…
